Established in 1892, Conroe ISD is a 348-square-mile school district that is geographically diverse and includes The Woodlands, Shenandoah, Oak Ridge North, Conroe, and Grangerland, as well as several other smaller towns, communities, and unincorporated areas. As the 7th largest school district in Texas and the 58th largest in the U.S., Conroe ISD serves over 73,000 students across 71 campuses and is one of the fastest-growing districts in the State with current enrollment growth averaging 2,500 students per year. In addition to being the largest school district in Montgomery County, Conroe ISD is the largest employer, with more than 10,000 employees. The District offers competitive salaries, is committed to providing quality professional development, and is proud to have one of the lowest tax rates in the Houston metropolitan area at $0.9496. In 2020, Conroe ISD was recognized by The Rotary Club of The Woodlands with a Community Hero Award. In 2021, Conroe ISD was named a Top Workplace by the Houston Chronicle. Since 2022, Conroe ISD has been named one of America's Best in State Employers for Texas by Forbes. Conroe ISD was also named a 2023 Hometown Hero by Interfaith of The Woodlands. Additionally, in 2024, Forbes ranked Conroe ISD the 37th Best Large Employer in America, 62nd Best Employer for Women in America, and 13th Best Large Employer in Texas. Conroe ISD was recently ranked as the Best School District in Montgomery County, Most Diverse School District in Montgomery County, Best Place to Teach in Montgomery County, and the Best School District for Athletes in Montgomery County for 2025. This is the fourth consecutive year the District has been named Best and Most Diverse School District in Montgomery County, and the third consecutive year being named the Best Place to Teach and Best District for Athletes.

Conroe ISD offers a comprehensive academic program with a graduation rate of 97.2%. In 2023-24, Conroe ISD students enrolled in 6,792 dual credit courses and earned a combined 20,875 college credit hours. In the CISD Advanced Placement courses, 5,563 students passed over 8,000 AP exams, earning nearly 24,000 college hours. The District's athletic programs boast a tradition of excellence with perennially strong performances at the local and State levels, multiple State championships annually, and nine UIL 6A Lone Star Cup awards for athletic and academic achievement. Conroe ISD's fine arts program offers and assortment of courses to meet the needs and interests of all students. In 2024, 30 high school students spanning the District's high schools were named Texas Music Educators All-State Musicians in the areas of band, choir, and orchestra. Since 2022, Conroe ISD has been named a Texas Art Education Association District of Distinction for providing a well-rounded education that promotes and integrates visual arts curriculum. The District is also a 12-time recipient of the National Association of Music Arts Merchants Foundation's Best Communities for Music Education Award. Conroe ISD's Career and Technical Education curriculum provides students in grades 7 through 12 the opportunity to participate in a variety of course offerings across 13 clusters and 29 programs of study. In 2024, Conroe ISD received the inaugural Career and Technical Association of Texas District of Distinction award.

The State Comptroller has awarded Conroe ISD all four Texas Transparency Stars for which it is eligible, becoming the first District in the state to accomplish this achievement for excellence in local government. Conroe ISD is also one of only two districts in the State to be recognized for 12 consecutive years for high academic achievement while maintaining cost-effective operations by Texas Smart Schools, formerly known as the FAST report. The District has been ranked in the top 10 of the 200 largest school districts in Texas for academic and financial performance, a ranking held for over a decade for academic and financial performance according to the Education Resource Group. Conroe ISD is a community of individuals working together to achieve the best for students. The accomplishments of the students, teachers, and administrators, along with the support of the community have helped make Conroe ISD a great place to be.

During the summer of 1928, a modern four-room wooden school was built for the Union Grove Elementary. At the beginning of the 1929-1930 school term, al school buildings in the District were renamed for Texas heroes.
