About Campbell Elementary
History & Namesake

Campbell Elementary will open in August 2025 as one of two new K-6 campuses in Conroe ISD. Our school is named for Mittie J. Campbell, who was the first Black woman to serve as a principal in the district. She began her career instructing teachers of the Texas Colored Teacher’s Institute in 1898. In 1916, she became the first assistant in Conroe’s Black public school and taught sixth through eighth grades. After Professor Ewart G. Abner, principal at the school, joined the Army in 1917, the school board chose Campbell to succeed him. She continued to teach even while serving as principal, and the Black school under construction on the city’s south side was named for her in 1918. In 1927, the school board decided to rename schools after prominent figures, so the Mittie J. Campbell School became Booker T. Washington. Campbell Elementary will serve both the Oak Ridge and Caney Creek feeder zones.
