About Washington High School

History

Booker T. Washington High School opened in 1954 as a school for Black students. Conroe ISD's schools were integrated in 1968, so the school was converted to a junior high. Washington became the District's alternative high school in 2019, when students were relocated from the phased out Hauke High School.

Phase I of the Washington High School Master Plan was included and approved in the 2023 Bond referendum.

The school is named for Booker T. Washington, a prominent educator and reformer who founded the Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in Alabama in 1881 and served as its principal until his death in 1915. Born into slavery in 1856 in Virginia, Washington became a public leader who advocated for industrial education and economic self-reliance for Black people in the post-Reconstruction era, particularly in the South.
